I SERVE…

“Labor not for the meat which perishes, but for that meat which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.” John 6:27

To serve Children means to serve with Enthusiasm. “For we are laborers together with God” (I Corinthians 3:9 - For we are both God's workers. And you are God's field. You are God's building.) Those who lack interest, fervor and enthusiasm in children’s ministry are ineffective in working for God. They give the impression that reaching children with the gospel is unimportant. We must work with divine inspiration. Zeal and enthusiasm bring results when presenting Christ to children. (Romans 12:11 - Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.)

To serve Children means to serve with Earnestness “…The harvest is truly plenteous, but the laborers are few (Matthew 9:37). Many Christians are flippant and unconcerned about reaching young people. They fail to take their soul-winning responsibilities seriously. We must recognize the importance of winning the lost children to Christ. One soul is worth more than the world. Effective results come with earnest witnessing.

To serve Children means to serve with Expectation “…This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom he hath sent” (John 6:29). Some Christians lack faith to believe children can come to Christ. They do not expect results, and they do not receive them. We must work with confidence. It takes faith us to receive Christ. It also takes faith to witness to children to bring them to a saving knowledge of Him (Romans 1:17 - For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith unto faith: as it is written, But the righteous shall live by faith.)

To serve Children means to serve with Endurance “…we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God…” (Timothy 4:10). When it gets tough, many Christians take the easy way. They fail in God’s work when endurance is required in working with children. To be effective in helping bring change in their lives, we must persevere. We must endure difficulties and distresses without being overcome. (2 Timothy 2:3-7 - 3Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. 5And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. 6And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor.

To serve Children means to serve with Enjoyment “…The laborer is worthy of his reward (I Timothy 5:18). Those who work drudgingly and ineffective fail to display the joy of the Lord. Working happily with children brings the results many are seeking satisfaction and will attract children to you. Happy Christians attract happy people. God’s children will be rewarded for your joyful service.

Live Life on Purpose

LIVE LIFE ON PURPOSE

I totally enjoy serving and being involved in ministry. I love the idea of having discovered my purpose and waking up everyday knowing what I was born to do. I believe purpose gives you passion for living. Not only does it give you passion for living, it gives you a reason to live. Because I came to know my purpose at somewhat of an early age, I have had the privilege of partaking in some incredible ventures.

As we pass the half way point for the year 2010, I fully realize that many people are hungry to know what they have been intricately designed and predestined to do. It is always one of my delights to converse with someone who has been searching and has yet to find that niche’. Part of my assignment is helping people unlock that gift and maximize the potential they have. As I have had occasion to share with numerous individuals, I would like to take a moment to suggest some keys to help you live a life of purpose and engage some basic principles that will help you maximize your potential. So here we go:

1.     Make a commitment right now to discover your purpose. How do you do that? By deciding everyday that whatever your hands find to do that you will do it with all your might. Make a commitment now to become the best at whatever it is you have been assigned to do. Purpose is that thing that comes natural to you like breathing. One of the keys to discovering purpose is to know what you were not born to do. This process of elimination works by identifying what you are not good at. Now maybe you are reading this and you have discovered your purpose already…good for you! Then decide now to maximize it and fully give your life to it.

2.     Seek out a mentor/coach or someone who can serve as your spiritual parent. Find someone who can help sharpen your God given abilities. Someone to help you become better at what you do. I believe everyone can and ought to have a mentor/coach or spiritual parent. For you to become better at what you do, you will need help. So ask God to help you identify someone whom you can glean from. And quite surprisingly, they are everywhere and more readily available than you may think. It is said “When the student is ready the teacher will appear”. So become a student of purpose and when you do, those who can help develop you will appear. Now if you have tried this and come to the conclusion that there is not someone in close proximity to you to submit to, then adopt a mentor through a book or audio teaching program. Someone I have adopted as a book and audio mentor is John Maxwell. I’ve never talked to him and he doesn’t know me personally, however, I have become a student of his teachings and so become his mentee. Mr. Maxwell has virtually become one of the most influential people in my life. So as you can see, they don’t have to know you for you to learn from them.

3.     My third and final point. Submit your days to God. Understanding that the Bible says that Heaven and earth will pass away but the Word of God will last forever. When your actions, plans and daily habits line themselves up with the Word of God, you can rest assured and have a certain level of peace that others won’t have. You will have the supernatural favor of God and whatever you put your hands to will prosper. Make a daily commitment to pray and present your plans to God. Spend time reading His word, meditating on His Word and making a commitment to practice doing daily what the Word commands us all to do.

Living a purpose filled life is not hard, but it is necessary and it makes a difference. Deciding to take some very practical steps everyday will cause you to become a purpose filled individual. Myles Munroe once said “Where purpose is unknown abuse is inevitable” Decide now to not abuse your life by living a life on purpose.

What are you most passionate about in children's ministry right now?

  [Blog]

What are you most passionate about in children's ministry right now?

My greatest passion in Children’s Ministry right now is to train and develop an army of effective children’s ministry leaders. I believe that the lack of quality leaders in Children’s Ministry ultimately causes every children’s department to fall short in reaching its potential. So through seminars, workshops, conferences and one-on-one mentorship, my passion is to train and help equip as many children’s ministry Pastors, directors and teachers to become the greatest leaders they could possibly be in their areas of responsibility.

When you train and develop an individual to become a leader at what they do the quality of ministry rises for that department. John Maxwell says it this way, “Everything rises and falls on Leadership”. There are a lot of individuals who are extremely busy serving in Children’s Ministry however there are few individuals I’ve met who see the importance of developing themselves as a leader.

The importance of building a team…the importance of duplicating themselves in others or even having the confidence enough in themselves to believe they have the qualities to duplicate themselves in others. The lack of confidence in those who are serving as heads of departments also effects the level of influence the person is able to have in their area of ministry. So developing one’s self as a leader is critical to achieving any level of success in Children’s Ministry. I thank God daily for the opportunity He has given me to be able to train and mentor so many individuals in Children’s and Youth Ministry. What are you doing to greater develop yourself as a leader.

What Makes You a Unique Leader?

What makes me, Ricardo Miller, a unique leader? I believe it's my ability to customize my service and purpose to the many churches, cultures and countries  I have the opportunity to serve each year. Having been born in the Bahamas, and studying children's ministry from a Caribbean cultured standpoint, then moving to the United States and acclimating to the concepts of Children's Ministry here  in addition to my travels to other countries; all of these experiences have allowed me to be able to provide a tailored service as a Children's Ministry Consultant. That's what I beleive makes me a unique leader.

But we want to hear about you...so tell us, what makes you a unique leader?

NO TV at Home Experiment Part 4

Our society has become increasingly dependent on television. In December 2009, we decided that we would go without TV in our home until June 2010. So with that declaration, my wife, my son and I decided that we would focus on each other and so many other important things that each one of us have to do daily. The surprising thing is that every time I mention the idea to some people, I’ve heard things like “Are you crazy? NO TV”…”Something must be wrong with you guys” or one gentleman stopped me and asked in a tone as to indicate something was wrong in our marriage or with our child. Another person told me, “Well, I don’t think anyone in our house can live without access to a television” All of these remarks came about simply because we decided to make a commitment to some greater things in their lives.

I am thankful to God for my family. My son who is 8 continues to amaze me in how he has embraced the idea. It’s never really been a big thing to my wife, who really doesn’t care if we ever bring it back. I wonder how many people in America are prepared to go 6 months to a year with no TV in their homes. I’ve found very few people that will. So many people have become dependent on this little box that sits in most American homes. Yet we find individuals daily saying things like “I don’t have enough time to do what I need to do.” When statistics say the average American watches 5 hours of TV a day. What’s going wrong with our society? Could it be that television is playing a major role in the deterioration of quality family time and personal development, not to mention how much of a negative impact it has on the average Christian person?

I am challenged to even say that there is so much negativity on TV that it has the ability to hinder our openness to hearing the voice of God. I think every Christian person should monitor how much time they invest in the tube. Take one of those 5 hours and commit to reading more or take another hour to listen to a motivational tape or inspirational message on CD or your IPOD, another hour and work on your goals, another to volunteer at a non-profit organization, or another hour to spend more time with your children…how about that and look at it…there are your 5 hours of TV time used in a more productive way.

Spend 90% of Your Time With Your Best People

  [Blog]

Spend 90% of your time with your best people.

Over the past 15 years, I've learned some basic truths in regard to developing an outstanding team. Two of our assignments at RMCM is to empower and equip children's ministry workers and church leaders. I believe the information in this week's blog will help you understand the importance of spending 90% of your time with your best people.

The top 10-20% of the individuals deliver 70-80% of the results. Spend 60% of your mentoring and personal ministry time with your top producers in ministry. Spend 30% of your mentoring and personal ministry time with your high potential people. Spend 10% of your mentoring and personal ministry time with the low performers. This means if you are going to invest forty hours in one month training, coaching, planning, working and encouraging your team, then twenty-four hours are invested with the top producers in ministry, twelve hours with the future leaders, and four hours with the low performers.

The great leaders in children's ministry understands this math. Too many leaders do not. Too many leaders are attracted to the problematical team members as moths to the flame. Too many leaders invest too much time with low-performing team members who deliver a low return on the time invested in them. Too many leaders under-invest in their best-performing people on the team.

It is a myth that the top producer in ministry wants to be left alone. The best performer may be independent may be an individual, may like to do it his or her way, but the top performer wants the great leader in on the action. The best performer will sell the leader on getting something done in ministry or will learn from the leader or will encourage the leader in making things happen. The best performer may perform at an even higher level. The great leader observes the way of the best performer and tries to encourage others to reach their highest potential.

The four hours invested in the low performers is spent observing, questioning, listening, training, and looking for a spark or a relevant talent. If after training, coaching and a reasonably fair amount of time, if the low performer does not improve, the great leader releases fast, making room for potential top producers, individuals who are more in tuned with God, connected with the vision and are personally ready to do what is necessary to improve their skills and bring their talents up so that we can get the most out of what we have with the time we have ministering to boys and girls.

No TV Experiment Part 3

We are well into our no TV experiment. A researcher once said the average American watches 5 hours of TV a day. Wow! Do you know what you can do with 5 hours a day? There are many people who don't work 5 hours a day, yet it is said the average American watches 5 hours of TV a day. I also learned some time ago that if you were to read for 1 hour a day on a particular subject for 5 years covering all aspects of this subject matter over that period you would be considered an expert. With Americans watching so much TV, you can see why most people are experts on movie stars, TV programs or what is being played on the news…

Now that we have removed the TV from our home, we have seen how our time is being used in a more productive way. Of course you've heard me say we've had the opportunity to talk so much more to each other…you may ask, "So what were you all doing before?" Well, I'd say we were talking on the move…meaning we talked in passing, got to the point, no details just tell me what you're saying and let us move on…But to compare where we were before to where we are now, I'd say our family is learning each other. Learning how our styles of communication differ and how we can converse and understand each other better. Not talking and moving, but talking and listening. There's more in-to-me-see (intimacy). I'm in-to-mate with them and it probably doesn’t hurt that we like each other.

We've also been able to catch up on many of the chores that we've needed to catch up on. Not to mention how quiet our home has become. It is now totally focused on us as a family and we truly feel rich; rich as in fulfilled, satisfied and whole…while the full richness may come over time, the wealth that we have right now is the foundation on which I believe any lasting financial gain is built.

Our son has yet to ask for the return of our TV. He, God bless him, has mastered the art of play…actually quite entertaining to see him. His mind is so full of ideas and ways to be creative. The game his aunt got him for Christmas has been the perfect gift…8 games in one (Go Fish is a family favorite) and we are all enjoying it.

My wife, has never totally been a TV-aholic, so she's quite nonchalant about it all. Her joy is simply spending time with us as a family

However, there are some evenings I find myself wishing I had that little black box. So for me, I miss it a tad. I'm in the process of trying to balance the removal of the TV and my time on the internet, which can become just as time consuming, some may even say even more time consuming.

There are so many things that try to distract us from being productive individuals. When it's all said and done, I would want it to be said "There goes a family who has learned to use their time wisely". One of the things you can never regain is the time you've lost.

Lately, I've been thinking that in the next 10 years my son will be 18 years old, a young man and I definitely need to pay more attention to that. With all of the various things that would try to take our time and attention, we must always remember to put first things first. Well stay tuned for part 4….

I must say, I started to feel the absence of the TV in the house this morning. It's been a little over a month and a week with the removal of the TV from our home and yet...it has been so much of a blessing. It has allowed my wife and I to spend even more time together…and us to have more time with our son who actually has not publicly complained.

For a 7 year old to be in a home without a TV and having not complained at all…. and he's a normal boy…I must say is impressive RJ. Knowing that this Christmas he got a Wii and is only able to play it while at my office here in Ft. Worth and he is ok with it. We get a chance to go to the office a few times a week together.

Around our house is starting to look like the public library. There are now more books than DVD's!…but being human and being a man, don't know if that means anything…this morning I woke up missing the TV…but I'm committed and we are going 6 months without any TV…so come on June 1. We look forward to gradually bringing back a TV room in our home for my family to enjoy.

The Miller’s TV experiment

It dawned on me late one evening while sitting to have a little television time with my family that slowly, but surely I was being duped, hoodwinked, conned…taken. By what, you might ask. I’ll tell you…it was a 60 inch box on wheels…the TV and its programming was, in its own way, shaping and molding my reactions, my thoughts and most tragically stealing my time. It was stealing time that I could be giving to my family, giving to my studies, giving to my purpose. I realized in that moment while watching one of my favorite marathons that this just wasn’t right.

In the midst of it all and the occurrence that completely took the cake was an advertisement for an upcoming movie that would be playing on this network. It was a movie about two men getting married and I found myself having to mute the television or completely turn it off to keep my 7 year old son from getting a whiff of what they were trying to do. You see, I realized the point of the movie was to introduce the family to this lifestyle in a comical way so that it eases the shock that, if not careful, we could actually be beginning to accept that it’s ok for two men to get married. Even if it was just a joke, I wasn’t laughing and I actually found it quite offensive that some medium could inject itself into my life so well, so smooth that I didn’t even realize the level of influence it had…that was it I AM GETTING RID of this TV…my wife and I both looked at each other in disgust and agreed, it was time.

For about 2 years now we had begun gradually reducing the number of televisions in our home. We went from 5, down to 3, to 2, then to 1. Even when we had guests we allowed everyone to watch 1 TV. We’d begun to discipline ourselves to share our time using it and to not to go to sleep with it on and try to watch family friendly programming. Unfortunately even in our efforts to gradually reduce or change our consumption, we found that we were still being entertained by things we didn’t fully agree with or believe in.

We also found that we were not as productive as we’d like to be. Getting home from a long day at the office, it’s easy just to pick up the remote and sink into the couch, kick our feet up, have a meal and receive our daily dose of programming. Programming that teaches how to conduct ourselves at home, in our relationships, at work, what to buy, and what we can’t live without.

So fast forward to two weeks in…It’s now day 15 and it almost grieves my heart when I realize how much time I’ve missed with my two treasures…my wife and son. The two jewels of my life. On the way to church this morning, my wife and I were enjoying our ride together and thought about just how much we really do enjoy each other’s company and how over the past two weeks we’ve talked to each other more. Even though we have a healthy and vibrant relationship, we’ve really gotten to know each other more. Mind you this is after 10 years together, 9 years of marriage + 1 year of courtship.

I do have to admit though, I did l.o.v.e. TV. I was the typical man who’d come home and FIRST thing would be grab the remote and sit down to catch a show…it’s the way I wind down. I’d catch a few shows and before I knew it, it was 9 pm and I’d watched a marathon of Law & Order…and of course I couldn’t go to bed without seeing the 9:00, 9:30, and 10:00  news with some Nightline at 10:30 thrown in which was essentially the same news repeated four times. So there you go…it’s 11:00 before I’d realize I was even home. There were days I’d abstain from the box, but even when I didn’t sit down to watch it; I’d have to have it on as background noise. The powers of the air and their influence were still making their impact.

Have you ever asked yourself what you would do and how you would feel if you had no TV in your home? Sounds strange, huh? It did to us at first too before we started gradually reducing the number of TV’s we had in each room. But think about it how much more time would you be able to spend with your spouse or how much more time would you be able to dedicate to helping your child with his/her most critical needs at a crucial stage of development. Have you ever taken time to consider, how well do you really know your family and how much time do you actually spend just talking. Better yet, how much time do you spend on discovering who you are as an individual or how much time do you spend reading or on self-development.

When I mentioned our experiment to one individual, they actually told me, they could not live in a house with no TV. I found that very interesting that as a society, we’ve come to a place that we can no longer live, think or function without TV. WOW! Over the next couple of months, I plan to blog about my experience. You definitely want to stay tuned and take this journey with me, a virtual journey albeit, but it may open both our eyes to possibilities yet to be discovered.

I'm happy to be writing to you today from my home office in Fort Worth.  I'm so grateful to have spent the last week and a half with my family.  I especially enjoyed some quality time with my son this past Thanksgiving weekend.

It was truly an honor to be with them, and I am so grateful to have them in my life.  We discussed how quickly 2010 was approaching, and how excited we were to map out our goals for the New Year.

I hope you're taking some time to reflect on the past year, look at what has worked well and what could use a little more focus, and that you're also looking forward to all the new opportunities that await you in the New Year!

With that said, what better way to kick-off 2010 than by heading to my home city Nassau, Bahamas on January 22-23, 2010 for the first stop of The Youth & Children's Ministry Leaders Workshop Tour!

The workshop will be held at First Step Academy, Fire Trail Road, Nassau, Bahamas. Priced at $89.00 per person with lunch, course curriculum, and a FREE copy of "Committed to the Call" included, The Bahamas Children's & Youth Ministry Workshop serves as an incredible training opportunity for anyone interested in ministering to young people.

The workshop will include teachings on the following subjects:

• Recruiting Workers Like Jesus Did
• Getting Parents Invited In Your Ministry
• How Do We Teach about Homosexuality
• How to Effectively Evaluate Your Ministry
• Leadership: Duplicating Yourself in Others
• Special Events That Reach Young People
• How to Get The Money You Need For Ministry
• The 7 Signs of A Healthy Children's & Youth Ministry

Your Ministry Is All About THEM

Over the years, I'm sure you have heard the great debate about which came first: the chicken or the egg? A second debate has been which comes first: your kids or your team?

After much discussion and research, my vote is that your team must come first if you want to grow beyond yourself and to multiply yourself through other people. Developing an outstanding team will allow you to reach more children and provide better quality service to your kids and to the parents.

Nothing can pay off more than knowing what your team wants from you and then helping them achieve it. Putting your team first along with making them understand you all are there to reach children and parents and to expand the Kingdom of God through presenting the Gospel to the world's most fruitful mission field; children.
